This boat is an exercise in simplicity of design and construction. i wanted to build a boat with little hassle, out of common materials, that i could put a small engine on and cruise the river at a leisurely pace on the weekends.
this is boat has no plans, molds or requires any special lofting or anything that is typically required of building a boat. a stitch and glue boat would have been MUCH lighter. but lofting the patterns would have made that method more of a production than i wanted.
the material to this point are simple:
1″x12″ x12′ boards – 2 full length for the sides and a 4′ piece for the transom
2″x12″x12′ board – 1 board for the two frame members to support the bottom and for the ridge (not sure what that is called) to support the vee of the fore portion of the bottom.
1/2″x4’x8″ exterior grade plywood – this is for the back 2 thirds of the boat.
1/2″ might seem like WAY overkill on such a little boat, but the river i am planning this boat for is a tidal river and it has all manner of submerged obstacles (which i have struck on many occasions) so i want to make sure the bottom is plenty strong. the front portion will be made from 2 layers of 1/4″ for the same reason. any questions please post them in the comments.
