Wood & Resin Coasters Cherry & Maple, Step 7 – Router & Seal, Michigan Woodworking Artists
The handled cutting board/serving trays Brett just finished had many great off-cuts. Eleanor immediately began sorting the pile and found pieces she liked for coaster sets.
Step 7 –
The final installment. The surfaces are sealed and dry. We’ll add the cork and let the glue set up.
Step 6 –
The coasters have been hand sanded and are ready to router. Brett just built the router table and put it to use on these coasters. Next, they had one more final surface sand and clean. We’ll get the cork attached as soon as the seal is dried.
Step 5 –
The coaster blocks were sliced down into 3 coasters each. Eleanor headed to the drum sander to run them through a few times. Next, she hand-sanded the surfaces & sides. The coasters are ready for the router.
Step 4 –
The coaster blocks are sanded and ready to move to the bandsaw. Here, Brett will square them up before handing them back to Eleanor. A quick refresher, she’s done this a couple times, and she’s ready to slice the block into coaster sections.
Step 3-
Spindel sander to remove the bulk of the extra resin.
The drum sander to level and clean up the surface further.
Next, the band saw will square the blocks before slicing them into coaster sections.
Step 2 –
The resin pours. We decided to go with primary colors for this set of coasters. The yellow and blue are a clean set without knots. However, the red & blue sections had 2 big & pretty knots to clean up and fill.
We’ll head to the sander to clean these up next.
Step 1 –
The first step was to head to the spindle sander and remove the bandsaw marks. 4 sides needed cleaning up, so this took a little while to complete. With the layouts complete and sanded, we’re ready to pour resin next.
In the fall of 2022, we made a kiln and filled it with freshly milled slabs. Two lots were cleared north of us and we couldn’t watch them put these huge trees into the dumpsters. This is the 2nd Kiln Drying Run. Let’s see how many projects we can complete from this second run!
As always Thank you so much for watching our progress!
