How to build a raised bed // Backyard Raspberries, Chapter 1

As a kid, I ate tons of fresh, red raspberries (and a lot of other berries too!) straight from my back yard every single summer. Now, with a house and yard of my own in Idaho, I’ve decided to follow in my parent’s footsteps and plant as many different types of fruit, berries, and veggies as I can.

To do that, I’m starting with a huge raised bed, just for raspberry bushes. The bed measures 4ft x 12ft long, and is 2ft deep. I’m using white cedar, which should last for over a decade without any staining, painting, or maintenance. Raspberry bushes tend to live for 10-15 years, so the bed should last as long as these particular bushes do.

If you’re building a raised bed, and plan on using cedar or some other long-lasting wood like I did, I recommend looking for a local fencing or decking company, and purchasing your cedar boards there. It’ll be a LOT cheaper for wood like this.

DIY difficulty level: Easy – You can do this project on your own, and finish in a day. The hardest part is filling the bed with dirt.
