If you’re looking for pattern uniformity in your lumber purchase, you need to set your eyes upon riftsawn lumber. Riftsawn is characterized as lumber where the growth ring angles are between 30˚ and 60˚. If we look at the face of a piece of riftsawn lumber, you’ll see a growth ring patterns. The lines are uniform and tell a story of the different seasons the tree went through in its development. The best way to identify this wood in a lumber store is to look at the end grain. Since often times wood is stocked on its face, it’s easy to get a quick assessment of the way a board is cut by the end grain. While rift sawn lumber is characterized by the 45 and 90 angles, who has a protractor on hand at the store? A more easier way to think of it is that the end grains look like diagonals.

Besides looking uniform on all 4 sides, another great feature of rift sawn lumber is the stability of it. You’ll get less cupping and 50% less movement compared to standard open grained boards.
